About La Leche League

La Leche League (LLL) (Leche is pronounced /LAY-chay/ and means milk in Spanish, translated literally The Milk League) is a non-profit, non-denominational, non-sectarian, and apolitical organisation with over 3‘000 support groups found in over 60 countries worldwide.   Established in 1956 in the United States and in 1973 in Switzerland its objective is to give information and encouragement, mainly through personal support, to all mothers who want to breastfeed their babies.

In Switzerland accredited LLL Leaders are available to help mothers in person, through the Internet, and over the phone (see Our Services).  Most Leaders also organise monthly Mother-to-Mother Support Groups (La Leche League Meetings) where breastfeeding and mothering experiences can be shared.   In Western Switzerland, English meetings are held in Nyon, Geneva and Lausanne.  English meetings are also run in the Zurich area.

LLL Meetings & LLL Leaders

To borrow from the most reknowned LLLI publication The Womanly Art of Breastfeeding, La Leche League meetings are the heart of the organisation.  They are free, informal discussion groups, held in the homes of members or at easily accessible public locations, that cover the practical, physical, and psychological aspects of breastfeeding and mothering.  

Facilitated by accredited La Leche League Leaders (LLL Leaders), mothers who have breastfed their own child(ren) and have gone through a rigorous accreditation process (and are responsible for staying current with the latest breastfeeding information, research and management techniques), at LLL Meetings mothers (fathers, grandparents, friends) can share experiences, give suggestions and offer support and encouragement.  LLL Meetings are also ideal for learning from and making friends with others. 

Lending Library & Resources

In addition to information sharing, each LLL group has a Lending Library that has a wide-array of books, publications and materials related to breastfeeding and mothering/parenting for consultation.  LLL Members are able to borrow these publications and materials at no cost. 

LLL Switzerland also includes many items for sale in the LLLCH Catalogue & Online shop and the LLL Suisse romande online boutiques.  Its English leaders also have copies of the latest edition of The Womanly Art of Breastfeeding (2010) for sale.
